What We’ve Been up to. . .

|

Well it’s been a while since my last post. We’re back from vacation and have spent the last couple of weeks getting back into things and while I haven’t had much time to write I thought I’d share some of what we’ve been doing. . .

What We’re Learning (Homeschool):

8th grader is working on his 3rd quarter school work through CAVA. He’s been doing great especially in math. He’s currently reading Ann Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl and while he doesn’t LOVE to read he hasn’t complained too much about it either.

Little dude has been doing “tot-school” at home which mostly means coloring and doing stickers but also working on puzzles which he really loves and listening to mom read stories.

Sweet girl is working hard at pre-school. We’ve been reading Eric Carle’s Animals Animals before nap and working on her Developing the Early Learning Book 1. She also does science lessons with daddy from The Berenstain Bears’ Big Book of Science and Nature. All part of her Sonlight homeschool curriculum.

What I’ve been Reading:

My eight grader has been reading Tactics for his Homeschool co-op’s Christian Apologetics class and I decided to read along with him. So far it’s very good. It’s about strategies for how to discuss your faith and beliefs in a non-confrontational way. It’s the kind of book I wish I had read when I was his age but so thankful that he’s reading it now and that we can discuss it.

I read the Kitchen House while on vacation and really had a hard time putting it down.  If you loved The Help, then I think you’ll really enjoy this one. I have a hard time finding fiction books that I really enjoy but this one was great, the characters really draw you in and I read the last few  pages slowly because I didn’t want it to end.
I’m finishing up Holley Gerth’s book Your’re Made for a God-Sized Dream and I LOVE it so I won’t say too much about it cause I’m going to do a review in a couple of days when I’m done. But if you have been feeling the beginnings of a new idea or dream stirring, pick up this book. It’s really great.

What I’ve been Watching:

So let me preface by saying that we recently got rid of our cable service so all we’re watching now is through Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon.

At first I thought it was going to be really hard but honestly we’ve still been able to watch movies, I was totally able to watch all of the latest season of Downton Abbey and the kids still have plenty to watch but it’s great to not have them have to sit through all the commercials etc.

But the downside is that there have been a few things we haven’t been able to watch like the History Channel’s the Bible series.

Here are a couple of the movies the hubs and I have watched in the past couple of weeks:

Searching for Sugar Man– A documentary about two South Africans who set out to find out what happened to their musical hero, Rodriguez. Never heard of him? That’s because he was never famous in the US but a huge hit in South Africa.I actually liked it. But I like documentaries and this one was well made and the story takes an interesting turn that you don’t expect. Well, at least I didn’t expect. . .
Flight– with Denzel Washington. Had a lot of buzz around it and I guess it was a good movie I just didn’t like it very much. Pretty dark story.
Moonrise Kingdom– from IMDB A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them.

I don’t even know how to describe this film. It’s a comedy/drama/romance all in one? It’s actually pretty cute. Has a great cast and is just a good story. Check it out if you’re at all into quirky or indie films.
Beasts of the Southern Wild– again, not sure how to describe this film. Also got a lot of buzz around it and was nominated for many awards. It’s a beautifully made film with a touching but sometimes hard to watch story.

That’s about it for now. And what have you all been up to? Any good books or movies to share?

  1. Thanks for this great list! We are going to tune into The Bible on Sunday…we’ve only missed the first episode which reruns before the 2nd on the 10th. Anyway, it will likely show up on Hulu Plus or Netflix. Great post!!! XOXO
